Description

Pistachios are one of the oldest cultivated nuts, thought to have been used for more than 9000 years. They originated in the Middle East and Central Asia, where they were highly prized by the rulers of ancient Persia and Mesopotamia. Today, they are cultivated in countries such as Iran, the USA and Turkey. Pistachios have a high nutritional value – rich in protein, fibre, healthy fats, as well as important vitamins and minerals – and therefore offer many health benefits.

Pistachios are extremely versatile and are used in both sweet and savoury dishes around the world. They can be eaten raw or roasted as a snack, added to salads, yoghurt or granola, or ground into pistachio butter. In baked goods, they are popular in biscuits, cakes, muffins and especially in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean desserts such as baklava and halva. Pistachios are also used in ice cream and sweets for their distinctive flavour and green colour. In savoury dishes, ground pistachios can be used for flaking, for flavouring rice dishes or as an ingredient in sauces and pesto.

The recommended daily serving of pistachios is around 28-30 grams – approximately 45-50 nuts. This amount offers health benefits without overdoing it on calories or fat, making it a balanced and nutritious snack.
